Prevent, Recycle, Reuse before Waste to Energy (WtE)?
Quite simply – after separating the recyclable components in the waste stream, using new technology to extract the calorific value (energy) inherent in our waste.
- The first step in managing our waste is to reduce it through better packaging and more recyclable waste – whether in the home (compost, for example), through repurposing items (e.g. old clothes), or separating out the recyclable components and disposing of these separately.
- Waste streams that would have been destined for landfill sites or incineration plants are sent to the new waste-to-energy site, any remaining recyclable material is removed and the rest is processed, producing power, fuel, clean water and other by-products.
